Justin relaxed into his seat and tilted his head, watching Raum curiously. “The Fallen have a nasty habit of underestimating people, I’ve noticed. You’re making a mistake with her, Raum, whatever you decide to do about the connection you two have. Which, I have to say, anyone could feel a mile away. How did that happen?”

Raum flexed his hands, remembering the pain of the Light he had channeled, and looked away. That was something he had no intention of sharing. “Doesn’t matter.”

Justin sighed, and it surprised Raum to hear the sudden hint of bitterness in the vampire’s voice when he spoke again.

“I hate to tell you this, Raum, but you’re going to have to start trusting someone. Things are going to end badly if you withhold information just because you think everyone will screw it up but you. You’re not in the Infernal City anymore.”

“Believe me, I’ve noticed,” Raum replied, giving Justin a dark look. This was, by far, the least enjoyable conversation he’d had in a long time, and considering who he’d been keeping company with, that was saying something. How he handled things with Ember was his own business.

She didn’t need to know about him. He wanted her passion, not her damned heart. And if she tried to open the latter to him, it would do irreparable damage. That was what he had become, what he had been forever: a conduit to pain and suffering. That was his strength. He would need it, all of it, to destroy her father.
